Heavy Metals & Essential Elements Testing

Doctor’s Data, Inc. has served healthcare practitioners from its CLIA-licensed laboratory in St. Charles, Illinois since 1972. Originally founded as Bio Medical Data, it was among the first clinical reference laboratories to apply ICP-MS and high-resolution ICP-MS to essential and toxic elemental analysis, and it remains a specialist in multi-tissue metals and minerals work. The laboratory is a validated supplier of trace-element results for the European Commission Joint Research Centre and participates in CAP, CDC and other proficiency programmes.

These profiles are used to assess recent or ongoing exposure, intracellular nutrient status, renal wasting, and—when clinically indicated—response to detoxification protocols. No single matrix answers every question. Combining specimen types gives a more complete picture of circulating load, cellular status, excretion and longer-term exposure.

Whole Blood Elements
The conventional standard for diagnosing lead, mercury and other metal toxicity, and for documenting recent or ongoing exposure. Whole blood captures both extracellular and intracellular circulating fractions. Blood levels rise and fall with current exposure (for example, blood lead has a half-life of roughly one month) and do not reliably reflect net tissue retention.

RBC Elements
Measures essential elements with important intracellular roles—magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, manganese and others—plus toxic metals that preferentially accumulate in erythrocytes (arsenic, cadmium, lead, methylmercury, thallium). Cells are not washed, so membrane-bound calcium is retained. Useful for intracellular nutrient status, recent erythrocyte-bound exposure, and serial monitoring before and during chelation so mineral replacement can be adjusted.

Urine Toxic Metals and Urine Essential Elements
Used to evaluate current excretion of toxic metals and to monitor detoxification. Timed or 24-hour collections, creatinine-corrected, reduce dilution artefact. Comparison of pre- and post-chelator urine is the method many clinicians use to estimate retained burden and track treatment. Urinary essential elements are better interpreted as a window on renal wasting and mineral loss during mobilisation than as a standalone nutritional assessment; blood and RBC remain the stronger status tests.

Hair Elements / Hair Toxic Element Exposure
A non-invasive screen (approximately 0.25 g of hair) for recent and ongoing exposure—particularly methylmercury and arsenic—and for time-averaged nutrient-element patterns. Hair is an excretory tissue; some toxic metals concentrate far more highly than in blood or urine. The CDC recognises hair mercury as a marker of methylmercury exposure from fish. Results are a screening tool and should be read with history, symptoms and confirmatory blood or urine testing.
